FAQ
What was the first cartoon?
It depends on the definition. Emile Reynaud projected animated shows in 1892, J. Stuart Blackton animated drawings on film in 1906, and Emile Cohl's Fantasmagorie (1908) is often called the first fully animated cartoon.
What was the first animated feature?
Quirino Cristiani's El Apostol (1917) from Argentina is the first known, but it is lost. Lotte Reiniger's The Adventures of Prince Achmed (1926) is the oldest that survives.
How many drawings are in one second of animation?
Usually 12 for hand-drawn work animated on twos, or 24 when animated on ones. TV animation often uses fewer.
What is the difference between anime and cartoons?
Anime simply means animation made in Japan. It has its own traditions of style, storytelling and production, but it is part of the same art form.
Are cartoons still drawn by hand?
Many 2D productions are drawn by hand on digital tablets. Paper animation is rarer but still used by some artists and studios.
What was the first computer-animated feature?
Toy Story (1995), made by Pixar.
Why do voice actors record before the animation?
In American animation it lets animators match mouth shapes and acting to the performance. Japanese anime often records after animation instead.
How long does a stop-motion film take?
Years. Animators may produce only a few seconds of finished film per day.
What is International Animation Day?
28 October, chosen by ASIFA to mark Emile Reynaud's first projected show in 1892.
Which old cartoons are in the public domain?
In the United States, works published before 1929 are generally public domain as of 2026, including McCay's Gertie and the earliest Mickey Mouse films from 1928. Characters may still be protected as trademarks.
